How ATS screening works for graphic designers
In-house and agency recruiters search the ATS for software by name: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, After Effects. They search for the type of work too: branding, packaging, social media, print production, motion. “Adobe Creative Suite” alone can miss a search for “InDesign,” so write the suite and the individual programs.
Your portfolio proves the quality of your work. Your resume has to get someone to open it, and that takes plain text a parser can read, plus some sign that your design achieved something. Campaign engagement, conversion, print run, turnaround time, brands served, assets a month.

Three fixes that raise a graphic designer resume’s score
- Keep two versions of your resume. A plain, single-column file for online applications, and your designed version for email and interviews. Many ATS parsers scramble multi-column layouts.
- Type your portfolio URL in full. As plain text in the contact line. Links behind icons or buttons are often lost when the file is parsed.
- Say what the design did. “Redesigned packaging for a 12-product line; sell-through rose 18% in the first quarter.” Even rough numbers set you apart.

Is it really safe to send a plain resume for a design job?
To an online application, yes. It's going to a parser first. Hiring managers judge your design from the portfolio. If you're worried, attach the designed version as a second file where the form allows it.
How do I list freelance work?
As one position, “Freelance Graphic Designer,” with dates, then bullets naming client types or well-known clients, the kind of work, and results. It reads as continuous employment to the ATS and to humans.
