ATS Resume Checker for Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineering postings are specific about CAD packages, analysis methods and standards, and recruiters who aren't engineers search the ATS for those exact strings. Our free checker scores your resume against the actual posting, shows which keywords you're missing, and flags bullets without measurable results. It runs on your own device, with no sign-up.

How ATS screening works for mechanical engineers

CAD systems are the classic ATS trap. SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, NX and Inventor are close cousins to an engineer and unrelated words to a parser. Name every package you've used, and lead with the posting's. The same goes for analysis tools (ANSYS, Abaqus), standards (ASME Y14.5, ISO 9001) and methods: GD&T, FEA, DFM, FMEA, tolerance analysis.

Engineering resumes often describe the design and leave out the result. Cost per unit, weight, cycle time, scrap rate, warranty returns, time to production. “Designed injection-molded housings” becomes “Redesigned a 6-part housing as 2 parts, cutting unit cost 22% and assembly time 40 seconds.”

Keywords that matter on a mechanical engineer resume

Use the exact wording below where it’s true of you. An ATS matches words literally, not by meaning.

KeywordWhy it matters
SolidWorks / Creo / CATIA / NXThe first filter; name every package, the posting's first
GD&T / ASME Y14.5Write the acronym and the standard
FEA / ANSYSAnalysis method, plus the tool
DFM / DFA / design for manufacturingSpell it out once; recruiters search both forms
FMEA / root cause analysisQuality and reliability methods postings name
Tolerance analysis / tolerance stack-upA literal phrase in design postings
Prototyping / testing / validationThe build-and-test half of the job
Injection molding / sheet metal / machining / CNCManufacturing processes; match the employer's
MATLAB / PythonIncreasingly expected for analysis and test automation
PE / EITLicence filters for consulting, HVAC and public-sector roles

Questions

Should I include FE or PE status?

Yes: “EIT (FE passed 2025)” or “PE, State of Ohio.” It's required for consulting, building systems and government work, and it's a literal ATS filter in those postings.

How do new graduates fill a mechanical engineering resume?

Capstone, Formula SAE or Baja, co-ops, research. Treat each as a job, with your own contribution, the tools you used (SolidWorks, ANSYS) and a measured result.
