How ATS screening works for nurses
Healthcare systems configure their applicant tracking software with hard filters: active RN license, BLS/ACLS certification, and unit-specific experience (med-surg, telemetry, ICU, ED). If those exact terms aren't on your resume, you can be auto-rejected even when you're fully qualified.
The second screen is keyword density across clinical skills — medication administration, wound care, patient assessment, EHR documentation. Recruiters search the ATS database by these terms for months after you apply, so the wording on your resume keeps working long after submission.

Three fixes that raise a nurse resume’s score
- Put licenses and certifications in their own section near the top. "RN, BLS, ACLS" should be parseable in the first third of the page — many systems weight early matches higher.
- Quantify your unit. "32-bed med-surg unit," "1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio," "floated to telemetry and stepdown" — numbers make clinical experience concrete and scannable.
- Name your EHR and equipment literally. Write "Epic," not "electronic health records system." The ATS searches for the brand name in the posting.
Questions
Should I list every certification on my nursing resume?
List every active, relevant certification (RN license, BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN) with its status and expiration awareness. Expired certifications should be omitted or marked "expired" — never listed as current.
How long should a nurse resume be?
One page for under 5 years of experience, up to two pages beyond that. Clinical rotations belong on new-graduate resumes; experienced nurses should lead with employment history and cut rotations entirely.
