How ATS screening works for medical assistants
Healthcare systems filter on credentials first: CMA, RMA or CCMA, plus BLS. They filter on the EHR the clinic uses (Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks) and on named clinical skills: vital signs, phlebotomy, injections, EKG, rooming patients. If your certification appears only as letters, or only as words, a search for the other form misses you. Write both.
Most medical assistant resumes list the same duties. Volume and setting make yours specific: patients a day, number of providers supported, specialty, procedures assisted, blood draws a week. “Took vitals and roomed patients” becomes “Roomed 35+ patients a day for 3 providers in a busy family practice.”
Keywords that matter on a medical assistant resume
Use the exact wording below where it’s true of you. An ATS matches words literally, not by meaning.

Three fixes that raise a medical assistant resume’s score
- Lead with credentials. “Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), AAMA, 2025. BLS current through 2027.” Put it directly under your name.
- State your daily patient volume and specialty. Pediatrics, dermatology and urgent care are different jobs. Recruiters look for experience that matches their clinic.
- Show both sides of the role. A few bullets of clinical skills and a few of front-office work. Most clinics want someone who can cover both.
Questions
I just finished my program. What goes in the experience section?
Your externship, written up as a job: the clinic, hours completed, patients a day, the procedures you performed and the EHR you used. Add any earlier customer-facing work; patient service is customer service.
Do I need certification to pass the ATS?
Where the posting requires it, usually yes, because it's often a knockout question. If yours is pending, write “CCMA exam scheduled (month, year)” so the keyword is present and accurate.
