How ATS screening works for project managers
Recruiters filter project managers on three things: certification (PMP, CSM, PRINCE2), methodology (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall) and tools (Jira, MS Project, Smartsheet). Each is matched literally. If the posting says “Agile” and your resume only says “iterative delivery,” you lose a match you deserved.
A project without numbers could be any size. Budget, team size, duration and result are what let a reader judge your level. “Managed software implementation projects” becomes “Delivered a $2.4M ERP rollout across 6 sites, on time and 4% under budget, with a team of 14.”
Keywords that matter on a project manager resume
Use the exact wording below where it’s true of you. An ATS matches words literally, not by meaning.

Three fixes that raise a project manager resume’s score
- Give every project four numbers. Budget, team size, duration, result. Even approximate figures (“about $500k”) beat none.
- Put PMP where a search will find it. After your name, in Certifications, and once in your summary. Include the year it was earned or renewed.
- Match the industry's language. Construction, IT and healthcare postings use different words for similar work. Borrow the posting's terms for phases, deliverables and roles.
Questions
Do I need a PMP to pass the ATS?
Only when the posting lists it as required. When it's “preferred,” the ATS scores you without it, and results carry more weight. If you're studying for it, write “PMP (in progress, exam planned June 2027).”
I manage projects but my title isn't project manager. What do I do?
Keep your real title and add the function after it: “Operations Lead (Project Management).” Then write your bullets in project terms: scope, schedule, budget, stakeholders, delivery.
