How ATS screening works for accountants
Recruiters filter accountants on licence (CPA or CPA-eligible), standards (GAAP, IFRS, SOX) and ERP system (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks). Every one of those is a literal match. “Accounting software” will not find a search for “NetSuite,” so name each system you've worked in.
Accounting bullets tend to repeat the job description: “Responsible for month-end close.” A stronger bullet shows speed, accuracy or scale. Days to close, entities, accounts reconciled, audit findings, hours saved through automation. “Shortened month-end close from 10 days to 6 across 4 entities” proves the same duty and says how well you did it.
Keywords that matter on an accountant resume
Use the exact wording below where it’s true of you. An ATS matches words literally, not by meaning.

Three fixes that raise an accountant resume’s score
- Put CPA after your name. “Jordan Lee, CPA.” Recruiters search for it, and the header is the first place a parser looks.
- Quantify the close. Days to close, number of entities, reconciliations a month, revenue of the business you kept books for.
- Mention audits. “Supported 3 annual external audits with zero material findings” speaks to accuracy better than any adjective.
Questions
I'm still sitting the CPA exams. How do I show that?
State it exactly: “CPA candidate: passed FAR and AUD; REG scheduled May 2027.” It matches the keyword and tells the truth. Many postings say “CPA or CPA track.”
Public accounting or industry: does the resume change?
Yes. Public accounting postings stress clients, engagements, audit or tax, and busy-season volume. Industry postings stress the close, reporting, controls and systems. Lead with whichever the posting describes.
