How ATS screening works for teachers
District HR systems filter first on credentials: valid teaching credential, subject authorization, and grade-level experience. After that, they search for instructional keywords — Common Core alignment, differentiated instruction, IEP collaboration, formative assessment. A resume that says "helped students learn" matches none of these.

Three fixes that raise a teacher resume’s score
- Lead with credential, subject, and grade level. "California Multiple Subject Credential · 4th Grade · 6 years" should be readable in the first three lines.
- Turn duties into outcomes. "Taught 4th grade" → "Led a class of 28 4th-graders; 82% met or exceeded state math benchmarks, up from 64%." Numbers beat adjectives.
- Delete the objective statement. Replace it with a 2-line summary of credential + years + specialty — objectives waste the highest-weighted space on the page.

Should student teaching go on my resume?
Yes, for your first 1–2 years — list it under Experience with the school, grade level, and what you owned (e.g., "solo-taught 3-week fractions unit to 26 students"). Remove it once you have two full years of contracted teaching.
How do I handle a career change into teaching?
Translate ruthlessly: "trained new hires" becomes "differentiated training for diverse learners," "managed projects" becomes "curriculum-aligned project planning." The ATS matches teaching vocabulary, not your old industry's.
